horsens - Anyone having tried to live abroad will tell you that it is harder than they have expected.
Not only do you find yourself a place where the local language is often not your own, but you also need to learn to function within a new culture, understand a new tax system and start off with no social network to help you. This often leaves you feeling lonely and not enjoying your life as an expat.
International Network Horsens (INH), established in 2013, is a volunteer organisation that collaborates with local organisations in supporting internationals and internationally-minded Danes to share their cultures and interests, make new friends and to enhance their personal and professional lives.
INH offers a range of events such as the monthly evening meet up Cafe WednesDag which is a laid back place to get to know people from all over the world. It is the informal evening meeting on the first Wednesday of each month (the next will be on February 1st at 7 p.m. in Cafe Noisette).
Cook'n'talk, where each month a new country is in focus, is also very popular. Meeting together, making food from the "country of the month" and learning more about it is a great way to expand your social circle and taste yummy dishes. It happens on or around the third Friday of each month and takes place from 6pm onward at Det Visionære Køkken in Kamtjatka.
Brunch and dinner
You can easily expand your horizons and meet new people if you decide to join the International Brunch and Dinner.
These family friendly events are open to all internationals and Danes living in the Horsens area. They are free to attend; all you need to bring along is a dish from your home country to share with the other participants.
Previous Expat lunches and dinners have been extremely successful, with around 60 people from 20 different countries attending each event at Horsens Library. Dates for the events in 2017 are yet to be announced. Every Monday from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. you can visit INH's headquarter on Smedetorvet (opposite the library) and join "Monday Meet Up" for a brunch.
Passion for dance?
Do you have a passion for dancing?
Salsa with La Luna Latina Horsens and INH - every Wednesday and Saturday (see La Luna Latina Horsens Facebook page for more details).
There are also events that are family oriented such as last month's Christmas party which was a huge success with loads of arts and crafts for the little ones and a visit from Santa.
From all over
The members of INH are from all over the world and have come to Denmark for many different reasons. And they are very happy to be a part of International Network Horsens.
- My husband, two amazing daughters and I moved to Horsens from Varna, Bulgaria in September 2015. As soon as we arrived we met some wonderful people and felt heartily welcomed due to the great job of INH. Now I feel privileged to be able to contribute to the Horsens international society by being part of INH Board, says Tina Vasileva.
- I moved to Horsens from Scotland in 2012, shortly after earning my master's degree and marrying a Dane, says Kris Carta. My old career path (Politics) was unsuited to my new life in Denmark, so while looking for a new career I started volunteering as much as possible. I joined International Network Horsens just after it started up. I found INH to be a great place to meet others, and it really helped me figure out how to get integrated into the local community. Over the years I've had all sorts of roles within INH, from a board member and leader to where I'm now "the I.T. guy". Currently I am finishing a degree in ICT Engineering at VIA, and working at Insero Software here in Horsens.
If you are interested in joining INH or just want to pop by for one of the events, you can find more information on their Facebook page https://www.facebook.com/InternationalNetworkHorsens , where all events are posted. The new board will be elected in February, so if you are interested in volunteering you can also send an e-mail: firstname.lastname@example.org .
