HORSENS – On the 25th of September a stone from Horsens Kommune was placed at the grave of the Horsens-born explorer Vitus Bering in Russia.

This happened at Bering Island with a ceremony, which marked 275 years from the death of Bering. The Danish Ambassador in Russia Thomas Winkler was also at the ceremony.

With this he became the first Danish Ambassador to visit the burial place at Bering Island, which is located 300km East of the Russian coast. The island belongs to Russia and so the country had seen an official marking of the death of the famous explorer.

The Danish archaeologist Orla Madsen placed the stone on the grave on behalf of Horsens Kommune. Furthermore a new statue of Vitus Bering was unveiled.

During a big expedition aiming to put the American West coast on the map, Vitus Bering was stranded on a desolate island – Bering Island – and the crew had to spend the winter in buried huts made out of driftwood.

Many of the men died, and so did Vitus Bering in 1741.

JCI Horsens International with Horsens Folkeblad and supported by Horsens Kommune is behind the project Horsens in English.

Horsens is an international city with around 115 different nationalities living here. There are many reasons why people leave their home countries and become expats. It is to use the opportunities created by the common market in Europe, finding new job, going for studies or maybe to be with other family members who are already living abroad.

Whatever your reasons, you mustnt live in vacuum, even if you dont know the language of this country. You need the information about the life around you.

Horsens in English is an online project aiming to give newcomers access to the information about the town, to catch you up on current events and things that are happening around. We would like to give you more knowledge about Horsens, its most popular sights, people and organisations etc. We want to be not just the mirror reflecting important events for the area we serve, but would like to make the community dialogue, to share the stories of local people and internationals. In fact, Horsens in English is a voice that truly echoes the life of our community, to make you feel at home.
